ANGELES CITY — Mayor Carmelo "Pogi" Lazatin, Jr. officially opened the new waste transfer station in Capaya on Dec. 12, which will streamline garbage collection, ensure faster hauling, and eliminate trash piles on the streets.

The 24/7 facility, set to be fully operational in January 2025, was funded by the city government for ?78 million.

With the opening of the 2,000-square-meter facility, garbage collection will be faster and more efficient.

Previously, barangay garbage trucks could haul trash only once due to the long trips to landfills in Tarlac and Porac.

Now, with the new transfer station, hauling can be done 3 to 4 times daily, making the process quicker, more convenient, and cost-effective.

To support the project, the city currently operates a fleet that includes 4 ten-wheeler trucks, 14 six-wheeled dump trucks, 1 backhoe excavator, 1 bulldozer, and 1 loader, ensuring efficient and effective waste management throughout the area.

Mayor Lazatin also provided 2 additional garbage trucks to barangays to further complement this initiative.

“This transfer station is a crucial step toward sustainable waste management and will bring significant relief to our community,” Mayor Lazatin said.

Apart from the ?78 million for the new waste transfer station, the city government also alloted ?5 million for the septage management and treatment.

The facility is equipped with a gated perimeter fence; designated entry/exit points to ensure efficient waste transfer; admin storage; and comfort rooms.

The station will also soon house wastewater treatment systems to enhance the city’s environmental management efforts.

The opening was attended by First District Representative Carmelo "Jon" Lazatin II, Vice Mayor Vicenta Vega-Cabigting, City Councilors, 33 barangay officials, Chief Adviser IC Calaguas, Executive Assistant IV Reina Manuel, department heads and chiefs-of-offices.

The opening of the waste transfer station is part of Mayor Lazatin’s flagship program on environmental sustainability.

To recall, Mayor Lazatin was awarded as a Climate Hero by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for his continuous efforts to improve the city’s waste management and address climate change.

The Lazatin administration also pioneered the success of the “Walang Plastikan, Plastik Palit Bigas” program, which has collected over 4 million kilograms of plastic, exchanged into rice, and converted into useful products like cement and bricks.
