ANGELES CITY – City Planning and Development Coordinator Ami Victoria Dacanay promotes a ‘Gawang Angeleño’ product – a painted claypot from Tabak's Artworks, featured at the One Town, One Product (OTOP) shop.

“Our city, being home to one of the largest US military installation outside US mainland, has been heavily influenced by American and other foreign cultures. Because of this, some of our kababayans are predisposed to use and patronize foreign-made products. This is why I think this ‘Gawang Angeleño’ campaign of Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin, Jr. is very laudable, in the sense that it promotes nationalism by supporting local products,” Ami said.

“Aside from showcasing the talent and skills of Angeleños, this initiative by Mayor Lazatin will also help the local industries in the long run, since more Filipinos will be able to keep their employment, if their industries are earning,” Ami added.

As a child, wanted to become a teacher and a flight stewardess and took a liking to history when she was in high school. Ami chose AB Social Sciences in college, in an effort to avoid courses with a lot of require math subjects in it.

After graduating, Ami entered public service through the City Planning and Development Office (CPDO) in 1981. For 39 years, she has handled various positions in the CPDO starting out as a project assistant, and eventually being a Development Project Analyst, Project Development Officer, Statistician, Investment Specialist, and Environmental Specialist and Economist.

Asked what makes a great public servant, Ami had this to say: “I think the values and attitude that an employees is more important than skills. Positive values and attitude outweighs much more than the hand skills Aspiring government employees should see government service as a means to improve themselves – their skills, their career path, and not as a means to “earn on the side.”
